In a recent interview with L'Osservatore Romano, Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos made the following statement regarding the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX):
"The excommunication applies only to the four bishops, because they were ordained without the mandate of the Pope and against his will, while the priests are only suspended. The Mass they celebrate is undoubtedly valid, but not licit, and, thus, participation is not advised, unless there are no other possibilities on Sunday. Certainly, neither the priests nor the faithful are excommunicates."
Last summer, Pope Benedict admitted that the Traditional Mass had never been banned. Now, the president of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei admits that Catholics who defied the revolution remain Catholics. And moreover, he admits that there exist legitimate reasons for the faithful to attend Masses of SSPX priests.
These are encouraging signs, indeed. It may mean that the "dictatorship of the proletariat," as Pope Benedict called it (Spe Salvi, no. 21), is finally coming to an end. We'll know it is so when they restore the Syllabus of Ven. Pius IX and the Oath against Modernism of St. Pius X.
