Mary as a Model of Obedience
by Clement
In America today obedience has become a lost virtue. In fact obedience has nearly become despised. If you don't believe me try this, obey the speed limit for an entire day. You will be despised. The same is true in other area as well. Society despises and rejects God's moral laws against killing, immorality and perversions of all kinds. Society promotes, defends, in law, and even celebrates practices which could not even be named 60 years ago. Of course celebrating vice, won't make it virtue. So in a society that rejects obedience to God, is it any surprise that there is little obedience to man's laws?
Mary was conceived without the stain of original sin, and she remained free from sin for her whole life. She was perfectly submissive to the will of God, and thus she is the perfect model of Christian obedience. We should contemplate her obedience and use it as a model for our own.
How would Mary live in today's world? It's almost impossible to imagine as she is so pure and the world is so corrupt, but let's try it in a simple case.
If the Blessed Mother were living in our society and drove a car, what sort of driver would she be? Would she stop at stop signs? Or would she just slow down and look for cops? Would she obey the speed limit? Or would she drive like everyone else? These are rhetorical questions. The answer to each is obvious; she would obey. Being perfectly humble she would not consider that her will should take precedence over the law (where the law does not command evil). So how would we behave, if we found ourselves driving behind our Blessed Mother?
These are small things to think about, but Christ said, “He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in that which is greater: and he that is unjust in that which is little, is unjust also in that which is greater.” Douay-Rheims Bible( Luke 16:10)
