... and 2 Steps Backwards

What would you think if President Bush went to China and quoted Mao's Little Red Book? Then what if Pope Benedict met with Jews and quoted the blasphemous Talmud? Well, that's what happened recently in France, according to Zenit News. The article calls it a "subtle revolution," noting how popes and saints had formerly banned and burned the book. (The hideous things it says about Our Lord and His Sweet Mother are beyond repeating here.)

Just when we think the pope is taking a step towards Tradition...

Saint Therese of Lisieux (Oct. 3)

St. Therese left me this wonderful morsel for those times when I second guess the good God.

"How happy I would have been to fight at the time of the Crusades, or later on, to fight against the heretics. Be assured that I should not have been afraid of the fire! Oh, is it possible that I must die in bed!"

Please post your favors and favorites from St. Therese.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary (Oct. 7)

On this feast, we recall a wonderful letter from Pope St. Pius V in 1569, two years before the victory over the Turks at Lepanto. When one day you hear the Holy Father resound with such traditional clarity, force and authority, you will know that the scourge has ended and that Our Lady of the Holy Rosary has again saved the Church.

(from Consueverunt Romani) The Roman Pontiffs, and the other Holy Fathers, our predecessors, when they were pressed in upon by temporal or spiritual wars, or troubled by other trials, in order that they might more easily escape from these, and having achieved tranquillity, might quietly and fervently be free to devote themselves to God, were wont to implore the divine assistance, through supplications or Litanies to call forth the support of the saints, and with David to lift up their eyes unto the Mountains, trusting with firm hope that thence would they receive aid.

1. Prompted by their example, and, as is piously believed, by the Holy Ghost, the inspired Blessed founder of the Order of Friars Preachers, (whose institutes and rule we ourselves expressly professed when we were in minor orders), in circumstances similar to those in which we now find ourselves, when parts of France and of Italy were unhappily troubled by the heresy of the Albegenses, which blinded so many of the worldly that they were raging most savagely against the priests of the Lord and the clergy, raised his eyes up unto heaven, unto that mountain of the Glorious Virgin Mary, loving Mother of God. For she by her seed has crushed the head of the twisted serpent, and has alone destroyed all heresies, and by the blessed fruit of her womb has saved a world condemned by the fall of our first parent. From her, without human hand, was that stone cut, which, struck by wood, poured forth the abundantly flowing waters of graces. And so Dominic looked to that simple way of praying and beseeching God, accessible to all and wholly pious, which is called the Rosary, or Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in which the same most Blessed Virgin is venerated by the angelic greeting repeated one hundred and fifty times, that is, according to the number of the Davidic Psalter, and by the Lord's Prayer with each decade. Interposed with these prayers are certain meditations showing forth the entire life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, thus completing the method of prayer devised by the by the Fathers of the Holy Roman Church. This same method St. Dominic propagated, and it was spread by the Friars of Blessed Dominic, namely, of the aforementioned Order, and accepted by not a few of the people. Christ's faithful, inflamed by these prayers, began immediately to be changed into new men. The darkness of heresy began to be dispelled, and the light of the Catholic Faith to be revealed. Sodalities for this form of prayer began to be instituted in many places by the Friars of the same Order, legitimately deputed to this work by their Superiors, and confreres began to be enrolled together.

2. Following the example of our predecessors, seeing that the Church militant, which God has placed in our hands, in these our times is tossed this way and that by so many heresies, and is grievously troubled troubled and afflicted by so many wars, and by the depraved morals of men, we also raise our eyes, weeping but full of hope, unto that same mountain, whence every aid comes forth, and we encourage and admonish each member of Christ's faithful to do likewise in the Lord.

Received this note:

There will be a TLM, the first Sunday of every month, in Wheeling at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. The Mass is at 1:00pm. We attended Sunday, it was their first TLM, it was very reverent and beautiful. I spoke with the priest after mass, (he is an alumni of FUS), he feels certain they will eventually be offering the TLM more frequently.

The ever evolving Ordinary Form is about to gain some new endings. According to Legionaries' news service, Zenit (click here), the following 3 options are coming:

- Go to announce the Gospel of the Lord.
- Go in peace, glorifying the Lord with your lives.
- Go in peace, alleluia, alleluia.

Another source reports a longer list that includes the following:

- Hope you had a good time; see you next Saturday.
- Be sure to pick up any wafers in your pew.
- Keep it down; some old folks have a hangup about noise.

It's good to see that the OF keeps moving ahead.

Effeminate Form (EF) Servers Honored

The archdiocese of Boston honored several altar boys and girl altar boys at their annual Altar Servers Appreciation Mass (click here). Cardinal O'Malley remarked, “We pray that the experience of being an altar server will help all to have a better understanding of their vocation in life, and that the experience may help young women consider the possibility of religious life and help young men consider a call to religious life or a vocation to the priesthood.”

It is very sad that this disruptive novelty continues. It sews confusion among the boys and girls, and subjects holy orders to a demeaning and false egalitarianism. But be on guard for the day that they foist this on the Traditional Latin Mass. For as much as I'd like to say, "the hierarchy just doesn't get it," I'm more convinced that they know exactly what they're doing. Pray the Rosary for an end to the liturgical novelties.

St. Francis de Sales Church 100 Years’ Anniversary with St. Louis Symphony Orchestra

On November 23rd an architectural gem reminiscent of the great cathedrals in Europe, one of the most beautiful churches in St. Louis—St. Francis de Sales Oratory—celebrates its 100th anniversary. At one time this church boasted 7,000 families. In 2005 the Archbishop of St. Louis, His Grace, the Most Rev. Raymond L. Burke, erected the church and its campus as an oratory of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. This young and growing community was founded in 1990 by two French priests and has today many apostolates all over the globe, fourteen in the US. The Institute administers all sacraments according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

To mark this centenary the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has scheduled a Pontifical High Mass with the Most Reverend Robert Hermann, Archdiocesan Administrator, as celebrant. The Mass on Sunday, November 23rd, beginning at 10:00 a.m., will feature music to match the beauty of the church’s interior: Charles Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass performed by the Oratory choirs and members of St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Nick Botkins, the Oratory’s Director of Sacred Music and Master of the Choirs.

20-October-2008 -- Catholic News Agency

St. Louis, Oct 18, 2008 (CNA).- Bishop Robert J. Herman, the administrator of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, has written a column reminding Catholics that their vote will be a decision weighed on the Day of Judgment. He urged Catholics not to treat the unborn as the neglectful rich man treated Lazarus in the biblical parable.

“Judgment Day is on its way,” the bishop wrote in the St. Louis Review. “We cannot stop it. We don’t know when it will come, but just as surely as the sun rises daily, the Son of Man will come when we least expect.”

“For many, this coming election may very well be judgment day, for this election will measure us,” he continued, referencing Christ’s words of judgment in Matthew 10:32-33:

“Everyone who acknowledges Me before others, I will acknowledge before My heavenly Father. But whoever denies Me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

Bishop Herman asked the faithful to consider what kind of witness they give to God when they enter the voting booth on Election Day.

“The decision I make in the voting booth will reflect my value system. If I value the good of the economy and my current lifestyle more than I do the right to life itself, then I am in trouble,” the bishop wrote.

He cited Pope John Paul II’s apostolic exhortation Christifideles laici, which said outcry on human rights is “false and illusory” if the right to life is not defended to the maximum.

“The right of our children to be protected from destruction is greater than my right to a thriving economy,” Bishop Herman continued.

“My desire for a good economy cannot justify my voting to remove all current restrictions on abortion. My desire to end the war in Iraq cannot justify my voting to remove all current restrictions on abortion.”

Rosary Novena Prior to the Election

Join in a Rosary Novena from October 27 to November 4 that Marxist pro-abort Obama may be thwarted. Sponsored by Catholic Family News, they are including a Church-approved prayer against revolutionary men:

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and all the instruments of His Holy Passion that Thou mayest put division in the camp of Thine enemies, for as Thy beloved Son hath said, "a kingdom divided against itself shall fail".

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for Our Nation

The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary have arranged for the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament this Sunday, November 2, following the 9:15 AM High Mass. This is in response to the need for prayers for our nation in light of the upcoming election. Each half hour, there will be a recitation of the Rosary. Exposition will end with Benediction at 5:00 PM.

An Unsettling Put-Down of the Novus Ordo

Latin Mass Network received the following letter regarding my recent article on girl altar servers. My reply follows the letter.

I am a young Catholic man and I find it very unsettling the way this blog pokes fun at the Novus Ordo Mass. I do understand that some very disobedient hierarchy members of the Church have caused serious harm, but what about those that follow the teachings of Mother Church? I recently read your blog on Altar Servers and I disagree; it isn't the fact that girls have been admitted to the sanctuary, it's that the priests have not trained their servers proper etiquette. I have written several unpublished works on the OF and the EF and the only difference I have seen is the forms. I believe if we become more focused on the forms than we do on the Most Holy Eucharist, I think we have lost the true meaning of the Catholic Mass. I have also been to several EF Masses so I am writing in an unbiased form. Please be more respectful to the OF of the Roman Rite.
