Modern Utilitarianism: CDF Approves Cannibalism in Cases of "Grave Reasons"

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the explicit approval of Pope Benedict XVI, applying a synthesis of Catholic thinking and the Errors of Russia, declared on Sept. 8th (the Nativity of Our Lady!) that you may inject aborted baby "biological material" into your children's veins:

Grave reasons may be morally proportionate to justify the use of such “biological material”. Thus, for example, danger to the health of children could permit parents to use a vaccine which was developed using cell lines of illicit origin, while keeping in mind that everyone has the duty to make known their disagreement and to ask that their healthcare system make other types of vaccines available. Dignitas Personae no. 35.

This is the same teaching we've been getting for years from "Priests for Life," a birth-control promotion agency. For more information on Catholic birth control, click here.

On the other hand, the CDF also correctly declared that:

Therefore, it needs to be stated that there is a duty to refuse to use such “biological material” even when there is no close connection between the researcher and the actions of those who performed the artificial fertilization or the abortion, or when there was no prior agreement with the centers in which the artificial fertilization took place. This duty springs from the necessity to remove oneself, within the area of one’s own research, from a gravely unjust legal situation and to affirm with clarity the value of human life.

Maybe next year they'll decide that Campbell employees must refuse to make soups of aborted babies, but that cream-of-aborted-baby can be served during famine. What's the difference? (Sorry to offend anyone, but sometimes it is necessary to illustrate the logical extreme in order to awaken the conscience.)

Pray the Rosary every day for the conversion of Russia and an end to utilitarian errors in the Church.

Cyprian,
Let me ask you a question- Your child is bitten by a rabid bat. The rabies vaccines has been developed with fetal cells- do you reject the vaccine and allow your child to die?

While I agree with you that we should avoid vaccines like the chickenpox (varicella) and rubella I believe the CDF was speaking in relations to vaccines like rabies. In that case the parent has not engaged in evil because the parent did not harm the child or create the vaccine.

I'll be interested to hear your response.
Mary

I don't think it's helpful to disregard my question because of an inaccurate analogy to pro-abortion beliefs. If my daughter were raped I would not countenance an abortion because that is a direct act of murder.

My daughter did receive the rabies vaccination after being bitten by a dog that was not up to date on its shots. I do not believe that was wrong and was unwilling to risk her life on the possibility of vitamin c curing her.

I think it's very easy to think in terms of absolute right and wrong but remember Our Lord told Peter in Matthew 16:19 "And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven."

The Church has the authority to make these determinations and while we may not agree with them we have to recognize that authority.
Mary
