Theology of the Body: A Critical View

By Mary Jane Farber

"But prove all things; hold fast that which is good."
1 Thessalonians 5:21 Douay Rheims

This is one way of testing trends that may hold our fascination today. With this thought in mind, I am dismayed by the current emphasis on Theology of the Body promoted in some Catholic circles. I was first alerted to this last year when my thirteen year old daughter’s religion teacher in school mentioned the term. I was dismayed to see that it is part of the Catholic high school curriculum in the diocese where I reside.

Theology of the Body began as part of 129 Wednesday talks given by Pope John Paul II between September 5, 1979, and November 28, 1984.

Having a thirteen year old and already raising a child who is now nineteen, I am compelled then to think seriously about how to have them understand what the Church teaches about human sexuality in the traditional perspective.

I do not feel that Theology of the Body fulfills this criterion for several reasons. In the first place, I do not think that the wounds of our fallen nature as a consequence of Original Sin are taken into account sufficiently. Especially in today’s climate of overtly physical and incessant visual stimulation, I think our perception of what a modest and proper use and view of one’s own body and others’ is seriously skewed. Having been trained as an art student, I think there is a correct way to look at the human form, which is with respect at how God created the body. Viewing the body as illustrated by Theology of the Body is markedly different than viewing the body from an aesthetic point of view.

Secondly, I think Theology of the Body spends way too much time on the emphasis on the marital act as a merely physical thing. One might mention that the Canticle of Canticles is written in imagery that is very intimate and graphic. This is so, but to serve as a metaphor of human physical love as a lesser reflection of God’s great love for us.

In the wake of the lifting of the Excommunications, there has been an uproar about some of the historical views of Bishop Williamson. In spite of the fact that Bishop Williamson has apologized, anti-Catholic forces are using this unfortunate incident to do everything from accuse the Church and the Holy Father of anti-semitism, request that the ex-communications be re-imposed (?) and demand the resignation of the Holy Father.

Please go to this website and sign the petition to show your support for the Holy Father.

I just discovered this blog by a priest in Corpus Cristi, TX. From my reading of the blog, everything Fr. Farfaglia has written is worth reading but this entry is special:

From a description of how Fr. Farfaglia discovered his vocation:

One evening during my Freshman year, I was reading either Plato's Republic or Aristotle's Politics and I was amazed that these authors dealt with a similar situation that confronted our culture; i.e. moral decay and corruption. Both of these great thinkers of the past said that there is no political solution for the collapse of society. The problem was spiritual and man's heart needed to turn to God. I then asked myself a question: Who best can reach man's heart?

The answer, I said to myself, is a priest. That one intellectual discovery shocked me and placed me on a journey. My spiritual life began to develop for the first time since the innocence of Catholic grade school. Four years of public high school during the 1970's were no help to a relationship with Jesus Christ.

the whole entry is here.

Fr. Farfaglia has the Tridential Latin Mass at his parish in Corpus Cristi, TX at St Helena's.

On the 70th Anniversary of the Death of Pope Pius XI

Thanks to the Rorate Caeli blog for remembering this champion of the Faith. Pope Pius XI confirmed us in many doctrines, from the Kingship of Christ to the priesthood and the Holy Eucharist, while condemning the errors of communism, socialism, ecumenism, and birth control. Several excerpts of his writings have been compiled in the referenced article. As a taste, here is his teaching on St. Thomas Aquinas from the encyclical letter Studiorum Ducem:

...if we are to avoid the errors which are the source and fountain-head of all the miseries of our time, the teaching of Aquinas must be adhered to more religiously than ever. ...against the much vaunted liberty of the human reason and its independence in regard to God he asserts the rights of primary Truth and the authority over us of the Supreme Master. It is therefore clear why Modernists are so amply justified in fearing no Doctor of the Church so much as Thomas Aquinas. Accordingly, just as it was said to the Egyptians of old in time of famine: "Go to Joseph," so that they should receive a supply of corn from him to nourish their bodies, so We now say to all such as are desirous of the truth: "Go to Thomas," and ask him to give you from his ample store the food of substantial doctrine wherewith to nourish your souls unto eternal life.

Vatican Elevates Darwin above Holy Scripture

In the never-ending quest of the modern Church to appear "hip" in the eyes of the world, the head of the Pontifical Council for Culture now throws in the towel on Darwin. In an article in the UK's Times Online, Archbishop Ravasi is quoted as saying "In fact, what we mean by evolution is the world as created by God." The article says that Ravasi brings in Sts. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas to bolster his position that Darwin is compatible with the Faith.

This statement comes in advance of a conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University on the 150th anniversary of Darwin's Origin of the Species. It caps earlier statements from Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI giving credence to evolution.

The problem, however, is that if man evolved, then the creation account in Genesis is false. "And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul." (Gen. 2, 7) You won't find a Father or Doctor of the Church who interpreted that as evolution from another creature. Hence, Holy Scripture will have to go into the fire. Novelty will continue its despotic stranglehold on the Church. And hippie Catholics won't have to look silly before the great minds of the world! God have mercy.

Legionaries Mind-Control Cult Renounces Founder

[Note: This article was first published in News on Feb 3. Because we received a comment that might be of interest, we have moved it to the main page.]

In a stunning development, the Legion of Christ is about to implode:

"Today [Feb. 3], Fr. Scott Reilly, LC, Territorial Director in Atlanta, Georgia, announced to all those who work in the Territorial Direction of the Legion of Christ, that Marcial Maciel had a mistress, fathered at least one child, and lived a double life. For this reason, the Legion is renouncing him as their spiritual founder."

Please pray for all those deceived by Fr. Maciel. Pray for an end to other mind-control cults such as Opus Dei.

Update on the Legionnaire's and Regnum Christi story

In an editorial by columnist Damian Thompson of the U.K. Telegraph, Thompson reports that Thomas Peters of the blog: American Papist attended a "Healing" Mass said by the Superior, Fr. Alvaro Fr Corcuera and concelebrated by 12 Legionary priests. During the course of this Mass some chilling events unfolded.

To read the whole column you can go here http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/damian_thompson/

(sorry to post the website but unfortunately the link is not working).

In spite of rumors that the Founder will be denounced, or at best ignored so that the movement can continue the following prayer was read by all present while kneeling [emphasis mine]:

Lord Jesus, you have entrusted to us the mission of furthering the Legion and Regnum Christi. This mission comes to us as an utterly free, unforeseen, mysterious reality, out of all proportion to our abilities.

Since the Legion and the Movement will be vigorous and will flourish as long as the spirit of our founder is present and active in our lives and behavior, we ask you to open our eyes to the urgency of learning, assimilating and passing on the doctrine, spirit, apostolic methods, genuine traditions, discipline and lifestyle of the Legion and Regnum Christi, just as our founder has made them known to us, since this is our responsibility.

Lord, help us to adhere totally to the charism you inspired in our founder. We ask from you what you ask of us: faith, great faith in your work, love for it, trust in its mission, docility, loyal collaboration, humility, a sense of responsibility, and fidelity. Amen.

I am not sure how the supporters of the movement will continue to "spin this". One theory put forward is the Fr. Alvaro will be remembered as the "true founder".

Mr. Peters was approached at the end of the "Healing Mass" and how he had known about the Mass (?). He replied that he was invited by a friend. The interrogator continued, "which friend". Peters repeated, "a friend."

You can read Thomas Peter's account of the Mass here.

Have a Heart - Give a Buck: The Michael Fund Appeal

Dear Friend of Life,

In the 1940s, the popular comedian Eddie Cantor coined the title “March of Dimes” to help raise money to fight polio. Every American, regardless of means, was asked to stick a dime in an envelope and send it to the White House to help raise research funds to eradicate polio. Despite the hard economic times, the first MOD campaign brought in $1.8 million.

Well, it’s February 2009, and times have changed.

The Michael Fund has become the prolife alternative to the March of Dimes, and instead of a dime we are asking for one dollar. This is the Michael Fund’s first annual online appeal. Our goal is to raise $250,000 funds for prolife genetic research - ONE BUCK for every person who will read this appeal during the month of February.

PLEASE - won’t you grab a dollar from your wallet or purse, stick it in an envelope, and send it to the:

Michael Fund

The International Foundation for Genetic Research, popularly known as the Michael Fund, was co-founded in 1978 as the prolife alternative to the March of Dimes, by Dr. Jerome Lejeune of Paris and Randy Engel, head of the U.S. Coalition for Life. Blessings During Communion—A Novus Ordo Problem?

There is an interesting piece in the February Adoremus Bulletin about some practice of giving blessings to persons who come forward in the Communion line but who are not receiving. It seems to be getting out of control (what else at the Novus Ordo?), with even non-Catholics coming up and—get this—receiving "blessings" from extraordinary ministers.

The Adoremus article recounts a letter written to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the reply from the Congregation. Basically, the CDW says this shouldn't be going on (phew!). The interesting part is that Adoremus takes liberty to extend the ban even to children accompanying adults who receive Communion. (Recall that Adoremus is one of those "reform-of-the-reform" groups working for a new new Mass. It was founded by Fr. Joseph Fessio who runs Ignatius Press, an organ for propagation of heretical works by von Balthasar and de Lubac.) I don't know about you, but I've always appreciated it when a priest blesses one of my little ones alongside me at the rail. Is this a problem?

Another interesting aspect is that, in the Traditional Mass, the priest actually gives each Communicant a blessing before placing the Host on his tongue. Fortunately, neither Adoremus nor the CDW has any opinion on that practice.

Fellay Speaks After the Storm

Rorate Caeli has posted a translation of a 14 Feb. interview with Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the SSPX. The interviewer asks about future talks between Pope Benedict and the SSPX regarding Vatican II. The bishop is firm, but is careful to avoid the old "modernist Rome" rhetoric. Some excerpts follow.

Fellay re Vatican II: "The texts are not clear, and there is a multitude of different interpretations which are accepted within the Church. If we do not desire the collapse of the Church, clarifications on this Council, which wished itself to be pastoral and not dogmatic, are urgent. John Paul II already said in 1982 that heresy had spread abundantly within the Church. We are thus glad that Rome speaks of necessary discussions with us to deal with foundational questions."

Question: "You have, nonetheless, the hope of reaching a doctrinal consensus with the Pope... "

BF: "That seems difficult. True, we have the impression that he is close to us on the liturgical question. On the other hand, he believes very deeply in the innovations of Vatican II."

Q: "The pope has accomplished a great step towards you, but one has the impression that he finds himself somewhat alone, disregarded by a number of bishops who apparently do not want you in the Church."

BF: "At a moment on which we speak of a return to full communion, the Pope is effectively, perhaps, asking himself who, between certain bishops and ourselves, is closer to him."

Regnum Christi: A View from the Inside

[Need help getting out of LC/RC? http://www.regainnetwork.org/ - Staff]

Rod Dreher, Crunchy Con Blog

An old friend who was in Regnum Christi, the lay arm of Maciel's Legionaries of Christ, writes about the Maciel mess. I post this with her permission:

Much has been said about the way RC members are conditioned not to criticize superiors and how this created a culture where so many remained loyal to Maciel. I agree with this completely. But there was another more subtle way in which The Founder "covered" himself. From the time I met the Legion in the late 1980's (I was in college), my formators, who were mostly Consecrated women, would speak in hushed tones about Fr. Maciel's prediction that he and the Movement (as we often referred to the Legion and Regnum Christi) would suffer terrible persecution. People would spread lies about him and the order, etc. Later, I remember, it being said on several occasions that, although John Paul II was a great supporter, the Legion had enemies and that there might be a future pope who would not be favorable to the Movement. I don't know how widely these stories or predictions were circulated, but I'm sure I was not the only one who was told these kinds of things. More concretely, the Legion published a small book in the mid-90's, I believe it was called Founders, which was a collection of biographical sketches about founders of orders and the ways in which they were misunderstood and persecuted. At the time I heard and read these things I was still quite in love with the idea of Regnum Christi and these mysterious predictions served to make the Movement seem like a heroic task. It also made me associate Maciel with other great leaders from Church history. It also created a sort of "mental circle" that I found hard to break. As rumors and accusations became public in the late 90's, I realize now that I had been conditioned to dismiss them. Not, only that, the accusations actually served to strengthen my belief in the greatness of Maciel and the institutions he created. Hadn't he predicted all this? It was only after I had been out for a while that I could see clearly that the rumors about him could be true.

Pelagius Revived

A Feb. 10th AP article, Archaeologists search for unbaptized babies' grave, renews the heresy of Pelagius, this time aided and abetted by Pope Benedict XVI himself. The Irish are looking for a grave of unbaptized babies, buried separately from the faithful because they died outside the Church, with the goal of moving them to rest with their families. The operation seems geared more to shame the old tradition than to comfort families 100 years distant from the deaths.

Here are some excerpts from the article:

"We're coming out of what we can only regard as a mistaken theology of a hundred years ago," said the Rev. John McManus, a Belfast priest who has been working with local families demanding that their children's resting place be mapped, marked and preserved. "People have been carrying the grief and burden of losing a child for decades. It's important we get this right."

Although Catholics have long believed that children who die without being baptized are with original sin and thus excluded from heaven, the Church has no formal doctrine on the matter. [A total lie—more below] Theologians long taught that such children enjoy an eternal state of perfect natural happiness, a state commonly called limbo, but without being in communion with God.

In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI reversed centuries of that teaching by approving a report by the International Theological Commission, a Vatican advisory panel, that said there were "serious" grounds to hope that children who die without being baptized can go to heaven.

Liberal Catholic theologians in fear of the SSPX

Extra ET-Newsletter of the European Society for Catholic Theology

17/02/2009
http://www.kuleuven.be/thomas/evkt/index_main.php?id=66&mail_ID=161&mailUser=default

This special ET-Newsletter contains a ... statement of the Curatorium of the European Society for Catholic Theology on the current crisis in the Catholic Church.

We, Catholic theologians from 20 countries, gathered together in Ghent for a meeting of the Curatorium (Board) of the European Society for Catholic Theology, are deeply concerned by the current crisis within the Church. We are especially worried that the unconditional lifting of the excommunication of four bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X threatens the internal unity of the Church and the credibility of its witness in the world (Gaudium et spes). This considerably weakens the ability of theologians to dialogue with other disciplines in the academy.

Fundamental issues are at stake with regard to the reception of the Second Vatican Council and must be clearly reaffirmed:

- The dynamic character of revelation and tradition, Church teaching and liturgy (Dei verbum, Sacrosanctum concilium)

- The collegial exercise of Church governance (Lumen gentium)

- Full respect for the freedom of conscience and the freedom of religion (Dignitatis humanae)

- The active commitment to ecumenical and interreligious dialogue (Unitatis redintegratio, Nostra aetate)

Members of other Christian Churches, with whom we have been in dialogue for several decades, now question whether the Catholic Church will take concrete steps toward fuller communion. Recent events demonstrate that a great majority of Christians have lost confidence that Rome is committed to taking seriously the newness of Vatican II. This crisis of confidence is grave.

As Catholic theologians working in the service of the Church, we hope that every effort will be undertaken to restore confidence in order that the gospel of Jesus Christ may be proclaimed.

Gaudium et Spes: Vatican II and the Religion of Man

In the previous post, liberal "theologians" expressed a fear that the SSPX threatens the unity and credibility of the Church as set forth in Vatican II, the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes (GS). They have it backwards. It is the liberals who have attempted to tarnish the unity and credibility of the Church, a condition that will be greatly relieved when GS is relegated to the dustbin of the hippie movement where it belongs.

Here is a brief flavor of GS. Some will object that I have taken the statements out of context. I reply that the reader is free to read the full document himself to see that I have not fabricated a thread that isn't clearly evident in the whole. I would further challenge anyone to conceive a context that would render these statements Catholic.

GS builds up the dignity and autonomy of man while diminishing the social Kingship of Christ. It then turns about and trashes man's dignity by calling for science to aid in birth control, by legitimizing government action for population control, and by defending the "right" of parents to limit their family size! It's amazing how liberals are so preoccupied with birth control, no?

12. According to the almost unanimous opinion of believers and unbelievers alike, all things on earth should be related to man as their center and crown.

"VATICAN CITY - The Vatican said Friday it has formally complained to the Israeli government about a private Israeli TV show that ridiculed and blasphemed Jesus and Mary.
"In the program, the host farcically denied Christian traditions — that Mary was a virgin and that Jesus walked on water — saying he would do so as a "lesson" to Christians who deny the Holocaust."

The article was entitled Vatican irked by `blasphemous' Israel TV show, showing the contempt of the Associated Press. Yes, it's blasphemous. And yes, Catholics are irked. And no, we don't expect the AP to understand how seriously and deeply offensive this is.

The Vatican might suggest that the press, rather than sluffing this off as some crank Jew on TV, take a few minutes to see that this anti-Catholic hatred is preached in their synagogues and is contained in their blasphemous Talmud. It is institutional. They deny the Redemption and Resurrection of Christ, and everywhere spread their hatred of Him.

Priest in Escondido, CA told to "Cool It" by his Bishop

Fr. Richard Perozich, a courageous priest has taken on the Obama administration as well as Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy and is denouncing them for the direction they are attempting to take this country in.

A quote from the sermon :

In the Old Testament, God's chosen people abandoned Him and sacrificed their own innocent children to a demon god called Moloch in hopes of a good harvest to feed themselves. The cult of Moloch lives on today, but just not under the god's formal name, but in the name of abortion, or rightly put, murder of children in the womb to promote false promises, ruined lives, and degraded humanity.

Abortion is our god and Obama, Pelosi, Kennedy are his prophets. His sacrifice is the life of infants and the souls of mothers. His priests are doctors who perform abortions. His church is Planned Parenthood and FOCA, (freedom of choice act). His covenant promises rights and freedom for women. It delivers death of infants, permanent damage to the souls of women, of men, of politicians.

This is a strongly worded sermon and I think most of our readers will find nothing to disagree with here. Naturally there were complaints to the Bishop and reportedly the Bishop has told Fr. Perozich to "cool it". Following that has been the usual smattering of the lukewarm praise, those who agree with Fr., in theory, but think he was "politically unsavvy".

The whole article can be read here at California Catholic Daily.

Here is the website for St. Mary's Church in Escondido, CA. If anyone would like to contact Fr. Perozich and commend him for his courage and support his good work, I'm sure he would appreciate hearing from some Catholics.

O’Malley meets Jews over Holocaust flap

(A Boston Globe article by Michael Paulson, February 24, 2009)

Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley met yesterday afternoon with about 20 Jewish community leaders in Boston to discuss concerns over the Vatican's decision to lift the excommunication of Bishop Richard Williamson...

I spoke to the cardinal by phone after the meeting; here's what he had to say:

Sermon for Ash Wednesday

GOSPEL: Matt. vi. 16-21. At that time: Jesus said to His disciples: When you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face, that thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father, Who is in secret; and thy Father, Who seeth in secret, will repay thee. Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where the rust and moth consume, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also.
HOMILY BY ST. AUGUSTINE, BISHOP
Book II., ON THE LORD'S SERMON ON THE MOUNT, CHAPTER XII.
I. By these precepts, as it is evident, we are bidden to seek for interior gladness, lest, by running after that reward which is without, we should become conformed to the ways of this world, and should so lose the promise of that blessing which is all the truer and more solid as it is inward; that blessing wherein God chose us to be conformed to the likeness of His Son. In this chapter we will principally consider that vain-glory finds a ground for action in sordid poverty as much as in worldly distinction and display; and this development is the more dangerous, since it deceives under the pretence of serving God.
II. He that is marked out by his unbridled indulgence in dress or luxury, or any other display, is by these very things recognised to be a follower of worldly vanities, and deceives no one by putting on a hypocritical mask of holiness. But those professing true Christianity, who draw all eyes on themselves by an eccentric show of filthiness and dirtiness, not suffered by necessity, but by their own will, we must judge of them by their other works, whether their conduct really proceeds from the desire of mortification, giving up unnecessary comfort, or is only the means of some ambitious design. The Lord tells us to beware of wolves in sheep's clothing, but, by their fruits you shall know them, He says (Matt. vii. 20). We test them, when by some trials such persons lose the very things which, under the cover of pretended un-worldliness, they either gained or sought to gain. Then it will appear whether they be wolves in sheep's clothing, or, indeed, sheep in their own. But, that hypocrites do such contrary things, does not entitle the true Christian to think it his duty to shine before the eyes of men by the display of needless luxury; for the sheep need not lay aside their own clothing, because wolves sometimes falsely assume it.
III. Let us note that Jesus combines fasting with prayers and alms, spoken of in this Gospel, as one of the best means to resist the devil. Though our Lord attacks the vain-glory attending the false virtues of the Pharisees, and making them hypocrites in the eyes of God, He does not condemn the sadness of a sinful, humbled, and contrite heart. On the contrary, this sadness accompanying our fasting is agreeable to God. But He condemns the voluntary forced sadness that comes not from a heart penetrated with the love of God, but is only exterior. It is a pretended sadness that tries to obtain the esteem of the multitude, who praise the severe penance of such people, whom God, seeing their hearts, justly condemns. The words of the Gospel: When thou fastest, anoint thy head and wash thy face, must not be taken in a literal sense, for we should certainly be found guilty if observing them. The real meaning of these words is this: As the ancients anointed their heads and washed their faces in days of joy, so we, in the days of fasting, ought to show holy joy. It is evident that, in all these commandments, our Redeemer had in view one object only, that is, to make us enter into our own heart, there to find the interior joy of the Holy Ghost. There may be as much vanity in the neglected exterior appearance of some people and their mournful looks, as in fine garments and exterior cheerfulness. And this kind of vanity is to be feared the more, since it is the more deceitful under the appearance of piety and godliness. He, fasting, anoints his head, when subject to Jesus, his Divine Head, he refers to Him all the merits of fasting, and feels an interior joy when, avoiding the pleasures of the world for His sake, he takes no notice of the praise of the people. He washes his face, who is carefully purifying his heart, knowing that the sight of the countenance of the Lord is promised to a pure heart.
IV. You wish to fast well; then humble your soul, especially at the approaching of that day, when the preacher of humility humbled Himself and was obedient unto death, even to the death on the cross. Let us imitate Him in His sufferings by subduing our desires with salutary abstinence. Let us chastise our body in order to keep it into subjection, and, that our perverse flesh may not tempt us to commit unlawful deeds, let us refuse to it, at least for a time, the lawful enjoyment of some things. Drunkenness and intemperance can never be allowed; but in these holy days meals which may be permitted at other times, should be restricted. Your body will feel more obedient and subservient, the more it is separated from things lawful, and is accustomed to abstain from rightful pleasures. And you will continue in holy cheerfulness to retrench the expenses of your table, the excesses of meals, and even avoid whatsoever flatters the palate.

Shooting Parked Cars

Thanks to the generosity of Pope Benedict, the traditionalist cause is making great gains in the Church. The lifting of the censures on the bishops of the SSPX has opened a discussion within the Church, and Traditionalists are eager to defend the Faith with renewed vigor.

A recent defense comes from Chris Ferrara, author of The Great Façade, an excellent analysis of post-conciliar novelties. Entitled Neo-Catholic Blues, Chris makes short work of the usual anti-traditionalist fare, a task he compares to "shooting parked cars." Included below are some excerpts from his article.

(Posted 02/25/09 www.RemnantNewspaper.com) Shortly after I responded to Phillip Lawler’s piece on the catholicculture.org website concerning the alleged (but never specified) doctrinal infidelities of Roman Catholic traditionalists, a Remnant reader alerted me to a piece published two days later on the same website by Jeffrey Mirus, who apparently operates the site.

OFFICIAL NOTICE
Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion

The Eucharist is the source and summit of all Christian life. It is the sacrament of salvation, the Body and Blood of Christ offered for us on Calvary and received by us, the People of God. Regarding the Holy Eucharist, St. Paul says, “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord” (1 Cor. 11:27).

The law of the Church requires each Catholic, before receiving Holy Communion, to make a careful examination of conscience, using the teachings of the Church as the examining criteria. After this private examination, each Catholic is able to determine whether he or she is prepared to receive the sacrament. Canon 916 of the Code of Canon Law states:

A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible.

The above mentioned preparation is private, as the state of each Catholic’s soul is known to him or her alone. However, there are instances when a Catholic’s unworthiness to receive Holy Communion will be determined by the Church because of a person’s public conduct. This determination does not depend upon the private examination of conscience but results rather from a Catholic’s public and persistent actions in opposition to the moral law as taught by the Church. In these cases, the Church forbids members to receive the sacrament. Canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law states:

Delusion, Psychosis, and Interreligious Dialogue

I wish I had a job like Cardinal Tauran's. Forming international commissions, attending meetings around the world, and having no objective criterion of accomplishment is my calling. But more on that below.

A threat looms on the horizon, though. Those recalcitrant Vatican-II deniers, the SSPX, are back. If they get their way, the façade might crumble. They must conform, as we've heard from Phil Lawler and Jeffrey Mirus. Progress in interreligious dialogue, and more, is in danger.

We just received a report on the progress of interreligious dialogue with Muslims. A "Joint Committee for Dialogue" has been meeting for eleven years now, and it's amazing what they've accomplished. In the final declaration signed by Cardinal Tauran, this Committee has agreed on eight statements. Here are three of them:

Today, Saturday, at 7:30 am, the Traditional Latin Mass was offered at
St. Joseph Parish, Lynn. With the blessings of the pastor, Fr.
Gaudreau, it will be offered every Saturday morning during Lent.
