Tradition Moves Forward

tara_postulant_002.jpg

A young lady takes the veil of a postulant; a Church groaning under the suppression of Tradition buds forth new life. Our prayers go out for Tara for discernment, for the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to grow their Traditional community, and for the Church to arise and restore all things in Christ.

Tradition is growing under Pope Benedict XVI. Latin Masses are more prevalent now than before his freeing the rite. Traditional communities enjoy approbation. For example, the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Still River, Mass., have been honored to have the bishop of Worcester perform Confirmation in the Traditional Rite at their chapel. The Slaves in Richmond, New Hampshire, have had their chapel approved for Catholic worship. Both communities continue the doctrinal crusade begun by Fr. Leonard Feeney.

While Pope Benedict lifted the excommunications of the bishops of the Society of St. Pius X in 2009, no canonical status has been granted yet. This may be changing. While we can't speculate on pending discussions between Bishop Fellay and Cardinal Levada, there was a groundbreaking event wherein Rome approved the transfer of a Dominican Sister from a Novus-Ordo community to a Traditional community under the SSPX (link). Pray the Rosary for Traditional vocations.

She is fortunate unlike candidates with a religious vocation in England and Australia who would have to travel to the USA.

In England they have to believe that the baptism of desire is visible and so an exception to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

They have to believe that Fr.Leonard Feeney was in heresy and so were the popes, saints and dogma for saying the same thing.

They have to assume that the Letter of the Holy Office 1949 was critical of Fr.Leonard Feeney instead of the Archbishop of Boston.

Life must be tough there for new vocations!

IMPEDIMENT FOR THOSE WHO OFFER THE TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS ?

Institute of Christ the King, Fraternity of St. Peter, Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate and many other Catholic Traditional communities believe there are exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. There is no Magisterial document which supports them.

The Letter of the Holy Office 1949 does not say those saved in invincible ignorance or the baptism of desire are exceptions to the dogma. Nether does Vatican Council II or the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

All or most of these priests in Traditional religious communities approved by the Vatican consider those saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire as defacto exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

They are implying that the centuries interpretation of a defined dogma can be changed.

Since they personally assume that there are defacto exceptions to the dogma they imply that the baptism of desire is visible and known to us. This is an untruth. For centuries it was known that the baptism of desire was implicit and did not contradict the dogma. The traditionalist priests hold this belief in innocence.

Since they believe that those saved in invincible ignorance are defacto exceptions to the dogma they assume that we know these cases on earth. Only if these exceptional cases were visible to us they could be exceptions to the dogma, which says everyone needs to be a visible, explicit member of the Catholic Church for salvation.

They presume Fr. Leonard Feeney was excommunicated for heresy when the Letter of the Holy Office 1949 says it was for disobedience. This is calumny.

Since they assert that Fr. Leonard Feeney was in error for saying there was no defacto known baptism of desire they criticize the popes and saints for saying the same thing. It is a criticism of the Ordinary and Extraordinary Magisterium of the popes over centuries.

They may hold these beliefs in innocence but if they do so after being informed its heresy. It’s a first-class heresy since its contradicts the Nicene Creed in which we pray, “I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sin”.

This is an impediment to them offering the Traditional Latin Mass.

To knowingly hold these errors would be teaching falsehood to the Congergations who attend the Latin Mass.

Thanks Lionel. I trimmed your comment but linked the article on your blog.

We just received the good news that the other young lady in the photograph could not resist joining the community, and will soon take the veil!

I'm curious about one thing you said: "For centuries it was known that the baptism of desire was implicit and did not contradict the dogma." Does this mean that someone might have been saved without water, but that we will never know about it? Fr. Feeney worked to defend and restore the dogma that no one in New Testament times enters Heaven without the water, no exceptions. This is what the community at Still River holds, and what I believe.

As for charging others with heresy, we have to note that the Church didn't condemn St. Thomas Aquinas for his opinion on BoD, nor the many Saints who repeated that opinion. Yes, the Council of Trent, to my mind, set this straight, but St. Robert and St. Alphonsus yet held onto desire. Hence, it seems that the Church tolerates the position of St. Thomas, namely, that someone professing the true Faith and submitting himself for Baptism could be saved should he die prior to the Sacrament. Hence, we don't have the authority to treat BoD advocates as heretics.

Lionel: It means the baptism of desire was never an issue until the 1940’s.

Fr. Feeney worked to defend and restore the dogma that no one in New Testament times enters Heaven without the water, no exceptions. This is what the community at Still River holds, and what I believe.
Lionel: I agree the general ordinary means of salvation with no exceptions, is the baptism of water given to adults with Catholic Faith.
Those saved with the baptism of desire are unknown to us. It is however possible ‘in certain circumstances’ and it is known only to God. In these cases God can provide the baptism of water for those who have a genuine desire and perfect charity.
So even with perfect charity and a genuine desire (and the baptism of water) these cases are not exceptions to the dogmatic teaching. They are known only to God.

Lionel :No we do not say that baptism of desire advocates are heretics.
However we know that the dogma is de fide and it is obligatory for all Catholics to believe in it. If a Catholic rejects the dogma even after being informed it is heresy. If he continues to do so it is heresy.
One can innocently assume that the baptism of desire is defacto known to us and explicit and so it contradicts the dogma. However once the person understands that the baptism of desire is not explicit and is not an exception to the dogma he is expected to affirm extra ecclesiam nulla salus. If he knowingly does not it is heresy.

ARCHBISHOP OF BOSTON CARDINAL RICHARD CUSHINGS LEGACY: FOLLOWERS INCLUDE USCCB, EWTN, CATHOLIC ANSWERS, SSPX, SEDEVACANTISTS MHFM
He assumed the baptism of desire was visible and so contradicted the dogma outside the church there is no salvation. He assumed that those saved with the baptism of desire and in invincible ignorance were known to us and so it contradicts Fr. Leonard Feeney’s traditional interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

Since the time of the Archbishop Cardinal Richard Cushing it is assumed there are two interpretations of the dogma. 1)the rigorist interpretation of Fr. Leonard Feeney, the popes and saints and 2) the non rigorist interpretation. The non rigorist interpretation says everyone needs to enter the Church for salvation except for those in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire. It is assumed here that the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance are exceptions to the dogma. So this is a ‘new ‘interpretation.

We now know that there is only one interpretation of the dogma, the centuries old interpretation since the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance are not known to us.

It is assumed that Vatican Council II, Lumen Gentium 16 (invincible ignorance, good conscience) is an exception to the dogma. This would be assuming that those saved in invincible ignorance are defacto known to us in particular cases. We know that they are not visible and explicitly known to us but known only to God. So they are not exceptions to the dogma.

De facto everyone needs to enter the Church for salvation. De jure in principle those saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire are known only to God. The baptism of water is explicit. The baptism of desire is implicit.

The Letter of the Holy Office 1949 was addressed directly to the Archbishop of Boston. It was critical of the Archbshop. It mentioned ‘the dogma’, the ‘infallible statement’. The dogma does not mention any exceptions. The dogma also indicates, like Fr. Leonard Feeney, that everyone needs to explicitly enter the Church for salvation.

Today the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops), Eternal Word Television Network, Catholic Answers, Society of St. Pius X, Pontifical seminaries and universities, sedevacantists, priests, nuns and lay Catholics are all unknowingly following the legacy of the Archbishop of Boston and the Jesuits of Boston College.

They assume the baptism of desire etc is visible and so is an exception to the dogma.

DID THE LETTER OF THE HOLY OFFICE 1949 CONTRADICT THE DOGMA EXTRA ECCLESIAM NULLA SALUS? NO
The Letter of the Holy Office only mentions the baptism of desire as did the Council of Trent. It does not say that the baptism of desire is explicitly known to us. It did not say that it was an exception to the dogma. Neither does the Council of Trent make this claim.

The Letter of the Holy Office supported Fr. Leonard Feeney by referring to ‘the dogma’, the ‘infallible teaching’. The dogma Cantate Domino, Council of Florence indicates all non Catholics in Boston and the rest of the world are oriented to Hell unless they convert into the Catholic Church.

There are three defined dogmas on extra ecclesiam nulla salus. All three agree with Fr. Leonard Feeney. The three dogmas http://catholicism.org/category/outside-the-church-there-is-no-salvation on extra ecclesiam nulla salus state as does Fr. Leonard Feeney that every one needs to be a visible member of the Church for salvation i.e. every one needs Catholic Faith and the baptism of water.
